  • Cupping 101

Hey guys!! I know I wanted to have this up for you last week but my schedule was kind of all over the place…and my little brother is leaving for his freshman year of college today so it has been a wild week in the Dudley house. Anyway, last week Micheal Phelps hit the pool with a dozen circular “bruises” and the internet went insane, but cupping isn’t new. The earliest recorded cupping practice dates back to the fourth century by Chinese herbalist Ge Hong.

The three types of cupping are typically practiced (wet, dry, and air) after acupuncture or during//after a massage. Although the methods differ slightly, they share a common goal, create suction of the skin into the cup. Once the cups are applied, they sit on the skin for 3-10 minutes.

I had the suction cups applied and used during a relaxation massage. Kayla (my masseuse) first used her hands to massage my neck, shoulder and back. She felt for adhesions and tight spots before using the cups to massage those areas. It totally doesn’t hurt but the sensation is…different. A good different. As she moved the cup over my tighter spots there was definitely more pressure, but I welcomed it.  After she was finished using the cups to massage, she applied the cups to my skin and left them their while she massages my legs. The cups where noticeable but not at all bothersome. I really liked it. After a few minutes she took off the cups and finished my massage. After what seemed like the shortest hour of my life, it was over.

Now it was time to see my marks. Before going into it I knew that the darker the marks meant then more toxins I had in my body. I had just came back from a vacation where I had donuts (three to be exact) and cinnamon rolls neither of which are in my normal clean routine so I expected the cupping marks to be dark. To my surprise, they were barely visible, only in good lighting and they were gone the very next day.

Comparatively, my little brother had cupping done a few weeks ago and his back and his marks were dark…they were super noticeable and there was a lot of them. You can totally see the difference in how our two lifestyles impacted the cupping. Not that Brendan is unhealthy, but he eats more processed food than I do. He will grab snacks or meals from Wawa when he is out with friends. He also loves to go out to eat whereas I prefer to cook all my meals. Those slight differences in our exposer to toxins made a big difference when it came to our marks.

According to a private practitioner of Acupuncture and Asian Medicine, Dr Lovie, “When our liver or kidneys aren’t able to process these insults to the system and excrete them correctly, the toxins are put into storage to be managed at a later time – and they’re usually housed in the muscle layer. The vacuum action of cupping rapidly facilitates the release of rigid soft tissues, stimulates the peripheral nervous system, loosens and lifts connective tissues, breaks up and drains stagnation. It also increases blood and lymph flow to skin, muscles, and connective tissues. It does all of these things far more rapidly and effectively than any other type of therapy, including acupuncture, massage, chiropractic adjustments, medications or even surgery.”

Ummmmm how amazing does that sound????????

To clear up any misconception, cupping marks are not bruises. They are causes by stagnant blood and toxins in the body. So who can benefit from cupping? Everyone. Toxins are unavoidable. They are in the air we breathe and the food we eat (no matter how hard you try to avoid them) If you have an autoimmune condition or an old injury cupping can do wonders for you! Athletes use cupping to help with healing and to increase their performance…I mean if the best olympian in the world is doing it, you know it has to be good right?

After cupping, it is super important to drink a ton of water and rest. You want to help your body flush out the toxins. Try to limit sun exposer to your cupping marks and you want to eat nutrient dense meals to help promote healing. The cupping marks can last anywhere from a few hours to three weeks so if you have a wedding or a photoshoot you might want to skip it that month.

This was only my first time cupping and I plan to keep it up especially to help manage stress heading into my final semester of nursing school. What are your favorite homeopathic health methods? I am dying to try more!! Leave me a comment and it might just be my next post.

  • Life Update!!

Hey guys! Long time no talk…If you follow me on snapchat you probably know we took a spur of the moment trip to Vermont to pick up Matt from military camp. (You know it is an emergent situation if the Dudley family takes a 9 hour road trip…we typically fly everywhere) To make a very long story short, Matt had a sore throat and a fever of 102 that sent him to the doctors on Friday. Saturday morning at 3am his throat was so swollen it was in the ER because he couldn’t breathe at that time his fever shot up to 104. NO ONE from the camp called to say Matt was in the ER and they left him all day in him dorm with no air conditioning and no medication. We called every single person of contact on the papers the camp gave and no one was helpful in the least. Luckily they were kind enough to give Mattt his phone back (you know, just in case he has to call 911 while he was alone). After half a dozen voicemails we did get to talk to someone from the camp and Momma told him we were on our way. Fast forward 9ish hours to us pulling into campus and the Navy Seal in charge of the camp explaining that he didn’t know we were coming or why Matt was leaving. TOTAL shit show. Anyway, they opened the gates so we could drive up to his dorm where he was walked out by ten or so kids carrying his stuff.

After our first hugs we took out a flash light and looked in his throat (which no one at the camp did by the way…they were going to make him participate the next day) and it was like nothing I have ever seen. It looked like there were half a dozen blisters and only HUGE (golfball sized maybe bigger) white spot…it looked almost like a cotton ball in the back of this poor kids throat. Needless to say, we packed up his stuff and got him the hell out of there.

We drove the whole 10 minutes to our favorite hotel where our friend Valerie works the front desk…she is SERIOUSLY the sweetest. She greats us like we are family. She is totally getting added to the Christmas Card list. LOVE HER. Anyway we get up to our rooms and get settled..Mom and Dad come down to the room Matt and I are sharing and we order room service which is the same menu as the amazing restaurant down stairs. We order our favorites (mine is their Mediterranean Chicken Pasta…sun dried tomatoes, artichoke, olives, feta…it is AMAZING). After we scarfed down dinner Matt wanted to walk around town so that is what we did. We walked and talked. Matt told us stories from camp…we only got to talk a few minutes a day so there was a lot we didnt know. We walked the entire town stopped for iceceam and walk some more. When we got back to the hotel, I set alarms on my phone to wake matt up to take his medications in the middle of the night. We each crawled into our cozy beds and watched Impractical Jokers until we couldn’t keep our eyes open.

The next morning we were up with the birds to pack up and get back on the road. The Dudley family getting ready for a long car ride is a sight to see. I can only think of two other times we have driven for a long distance and neither one was pretty…Thank God for frequent flyer miles.  Before we left Vermont for the very last time we grabbed and a little breakfast from a themed coffee shop…I think the theme was Vermont/Bernie Sanders. When we walked in Matt said, “It smells like weed and coffee in here.” That is definitely the most accurate description ever…regardless the food and coffee were amazing.

We then piled in the car for the nine hour journey. As we drove Matt’s fever started to spike again and you could tell, even with the medication, he was so sick. We went right to CHOPs urgent care where he was see and treated with steroids. He is feeling much better now but he has a lot of resting to do before Saturday because we are headed to my FAVORITE place on earth and I am taking you guys with me!

Expect a bunch of vlogs in the next week and a half! PS with classes starting again in the next couple of weeks I plan to give you content at least three days a week. Some week (when I don’t have exams) you may get more but I will always give you at least three new things to read//watch during the semester. I haven’t figured out what days I will be posting yet…The first few weeks I am going to play it by ear to see when I have the most free time.

Anyway, it was GREAT catching up with you!! Since I have been home I have started a new project. I am helping my friend Meghan organize her house! Her project includes the basement, her office//party room, and 5ish closets. Today we are on day three and we have made MAJOR progress. The basement is pretty much all done. I cant wait to show you before and afters. Here is a sneak peak.

Well I’m off to make some protein pancakes before TRX and more work on the organization project!! Can you believe it is Wednesday already!?! I feel like this week is FLYING

  • OCD Organization: My Closet

Good Morning!! I have a busy busy day as I prep for a photoshoot tomorrow. If you follow me on SnapChat (Katie_Dudley) you know that I spent most of yesterday cleaning and reorganizing my closet. I had a pretty open schedule yesterday so I decided to tackle one of the projects on my Mater Task list in my Purposeful Planner (Don’t forget it is on SALE until Friday).

I have a confession to make…I am a hoarder. I have every card I have ever received, hats and purses from Limited Too (talk about a blast from the past) and every picture made for me by the kids I have babysat over the years. I seriously have it all.

It was time to do a MAJOR closet clean out. I totally avoided my closet when I painted my room because, well, I knew it was going to be a project. I downsized my space for clothes when I got rid of my dresser. I didn’t want a clunky piece of furniture ruining my carefully crafted aesthetic. This meant my closet was BUSTING at the seams. I couldn’t even open the doors there was so much junk…seriously, that is how the widest I could open the doors.

    Step One: Organize Your Space

I started the process by stripping my bed. Why? I knew there was going to be dust, plus the ruffles and 15 pillows would have taken up valuable space on my bed aka where all my clothes were going. I knew I was going to have to map out a plan// walking path before hand. I strategically placed laundry baskets in spaces where I knew there was room to pile.

    Step Two: Dive In.

For me, this is the worst part, getting started. It feels like taking your step off a ledge..there is no turning back. I started by removing my clothes by section. My closet was loosely organized buy type of clothing and color prior to starting the clean out so that was helpful. I removed each section and started pulling clothes I knew it was time to donate. I put each section in a different pile on my bed so that it was more organized when it came time to hang everything back up.

    Step Three: The Junk

After removing all the clothes, I started to attack the bottom portion. Bags, bags and more bags…mostly the reusable ones from Lululemon…and about 15 purses. All my favorite childhood stuffed animals were also shoved in there along side a lamp, a DVD player and (surprise) more bags. This is the portion where you find your FAVORITE slinky from your birthday party in third grade. This is also the time where the excitement and fun starts to wear off and you become OVER IT.

    Step Four: Curing the Burnout

You are an hour and a half in, your room looks like you are the star on the latest season of Hoarders Burried Alive ( the really outrageous one they save for the season finale ). How to you get back into the organization mode? A quick Dance Party break. Or make a cup of coffee. Or have an apple. But whatever you do, for the Love of God, do not I repeat DO NOT sit down. You will loose momentum and you room will stay a mess forever.

    Step Five: Refocus

Finish the last of sorting the junk, or bags, in my case. In the wise words of Troy Bolton, get your head in the game. Go through all the ‘stuff’ one final time (we will go through the clothes again when it comes time to hang them back up). Decide what is straight up junk and what are things that can be donated. Start bagging it all up if you hadn’t already. Being the wacko that I am, I color code my trash bags. I have two going at once, one for donations, one for garbage.

    Step Six: Clean

Now that your closet is totally empty, its time to clean the dust bunnies the size of Texas that have been collecting since the last time you cleaned out your space. Vacuum, wipe down the walls and floor. Make it shimmer and shine.

Step Seven: Putting it all Back Together

This is my FAVORITE part. Put it all back starting with the clothes. I started hanging each section up one at a time. This time I looked at each piece much more critically, be realistic and get rid of everything you wont wear. I made six different sections: Winter jackets//vests, sweatshirts (divided by hoodies, crew neck, quarter zip and zip up; then color coordinated in each section), Lululemon razor back tanks (yes, they get their very own section), shirts (in color order, then organized by sleeve length//fabric thickness), maxi and cocktail dress, and finally formal wear.

After ever last piece of clothing was hung with care, I put all the bags I kept inside my favorite pink Nike duffle…all the bags are now neatly contained. Finally I put my fire ladder (yes, I have we have a fire safety pan. Don’t you?) and all my canvases // pictures from college in the closet according to size.

    AND THATS IT.

Yes it took me hours, but I feel soooooo much better now that it is done. I love love love the process of decluttering and organizing.

Oh and I totally forgot to mention… those clear boxes on the top of my closet are my shoes. Each pair gets its own box for easy, clear, uniform storage. I LOVE these shoe boxes from The Container Store. I even keep five of them in the back of my car (spin shoes, gym sneakers, casual wear sneakers, cheap flip flops, fancy flip flops). so I can adapt my outfit throughout the day.

I am off to get my lashes refilled and a manicure before a TPB photoshoot tomorrow! I can’t wait to introduce you to my favorite up-and-coming photographer…she is oh so talented and she just so happens to be my little brother’s girlfriend. I will vlog the entire process!

  • OCD Agenda: UPDATE

If we have met you probably know about my extreme day planner obsession. Having a perfectly OCD planner is SUPER important to me, so much so that there was a post during my launch. Well, in the last month I have upgraded to the most over the top OCD planner…ever. They are currently having a Christmas in July Sale so I NEEDED to share this company with you.

Here is the deal, The Purposeful Planner by Corie Clark breaks down pretty much your entire life. Each month you get a Month at a Glance calendar, monthly budget (broken down into 11 categories), Monthly Menu, Master Task List, Dreams and Goals, and a full page per day with a schedule from 6am-9pm. Are you feeling calmer and more organized already? Same.

Running a blog, babysitting, school and balancing my life can be tricky. Most days I have at least three major tasks that need to be done. This means time management is key…and it has always been my weakness. I will get caught up in writing a post or editing a picture or playing with a recipe (these things really excite me… am I 23 or 63…you decide).

My planner breaking down my day by the hour ensures that I stick to the time table I have given each task. Each Sunday I map out the BIG things for each day, work hours, gym, blog posts, social events. Then I see where I can squeeze in the little things (laundry, studying, research for up-coming posts). On days where I have a lot of free time, I take a look at my Master Task List and work on getting those accomplished. I mean seriously, you need this planner.

If you are a student, a mom or just a girl with selective OCD (should we start a club? Unclear, but let me know) you NEED this planner. You all ready know I still use my collection of washi tape for the month at a glance calendar, but take a look at how detailed each day is…UNREAL.

Each day is broken down completely. You start with selecting your three main tasks for the day, followed by your schedule broken down by the hour (6am-9pm). There is a health section to fill in your workout or goal for the day. Next there is a section to check off your water intake…8 little circles…LOVE. There is also a section for Prayers & Praise, a suggested 15 minute activity for the day (today’s is to clean your ear haha). You also get a section for a Brain Dump, Retail Therapy and you daily Menu. This is for EVERY day of the work week.

Saturdays and Sundays are slightly different…you don’t get the hourly schedule…which I would like to see in next years addition. My weekends are equally as crazy as my week days. Even with that tiny flaw, this is still the best planner on the market in my opinion.

Okay okay, I am off to re organize my closet and recreate the most amazing pasta dish I had in Vermont. Did you order your planner yet? Have a great day babes!

    xoxo,
