  • Calories: Why they DONT Matter

Happy Monday! Is it weird that I like Mondays? It feels like a fresh start you know? There is a lot happening this week blog and life wise. Im pumped. I got fresh highlights this weekend and I have a lash refill on Wednesday so you know it is going to be a good week. Anyyyy way let’s get into it shall we?

I want to dive head first into one of my FAVORITE things to talk about, diet. More specifically calories and why they don’t matter.

Yes that was a bold statement. I don’t believe in looking at calories. Crazy right? Hear me out. Every fad diet and women’s magazine has brainwashed us in to believing low calorie is the way to go when trying to lose weight and become healthy. In theory it sounds like a good idea… eat less, weigh less. I have tried those fad diets: low carb, no fat, no fun. Yes I dropped weight but I wasn’t any healthier. I was miserable because I was hungry. These diets have you restrict yourself or even worse cut out an entire food group which is why they don’t work longterm. In order to function your body needs carbs, veggies, fats and protein. (Veggies are in the carb family but they are sooooo important I give there own group.)

So what are calories? A unit of measurement. Calories are the amount of energy that a food//drink will give you. So it makes sense why we feel so tired, sluggish and dare I say bitchy when we are restricting ourselves. When you listen to your body and eat 80% unprocessed foods and you have an active lifestyle there is no need for counting calories.

If you are eating a high number of calories (that are processed and full of nasty chemicals) and you don’t use that energy it is then stored as fat. Why? Because back in the day when we were hunting and gathering we held on to those extra calories because we didn’t know when we would get our next major meal or when we were going to have to run from a lion. It makes sense right?

If you are eating 80% unprocessed and all natural food you will look and more importantly feel so much better.

When I changed the way I looked at food labels, I changed the way I felt about food. I used to look only at the calories and not at the ingredients. If it was over 200 calories I wouldn’t eat it. I looked for packages that said ‘Low Fat’ and ‘100 Calories Per Serving’ in bright bold font. What those labels don’t say is ‘Full of Chemicals’ and ‘No Nutritional Value’.  I couldn’t tell you the last time I looked at the calorie count in any of my foods, my eyes go right to the ingredients. If I see that the ingredients are all natural, chemical free and REAL that is all I care about. If I don’t know what an ingredient is I google it. I want to know what I am putting in my body. Who cares if the calories are higher is the food is better quality?

If I am being honest, most of my food doesn’t have a label. I usually fill up my cart with veggies, leafy greens and a variety of fruits. Then I get meat, I alway organic ground turkey and chicken. Those things make up 80% if not more of my diet. Add in some brown rice, quinoa chips and a few freshly baked organic chocolate chip cookies and I’m set for the week.

My FAVORITE example when talking about my view on calories is soda. Diet soda is zero calories. My smoothies are up to 200 calories. It is a no brainer which one you should be drinking but someone who is calorie counting may be naturally drawn to the wrong choice. When it comes to making the healthiest choice the ingredients always come before the number of calories. Food is fuel and the higher quality the better. Always try to think about what you eat and how it is impacting your body.

Do you track you calories? Or do you keep a food diary? Or are you like me and adjust your diet based on your actives and how you feel? Tell me how you stay on track!

  • Confessions of a People Pleaser: Boundaries

Boundaries, or a lack of them, are probably my biggest weakness. I am a ‘Yes’ Girl to a fault. Even when it’s inconvenient or something I really don’t want to do. I, used to, always say yes regardless of how little sleep I was going to get or how ridiculous the request may have been. During the extensive work I did on myself over the past couple of months I learned it is OKAY to say no, AND not give a reason why.

“Can you walk on water, eat fire and then birth a litter of puppies in the next 34 minutes?”

Obviously this is an exaggeration, but it’s not far from texts I have gotten from a host of different people over the years. Of course none of these people started off with outlandish request, but after years of doing a ton of tiny favors it built up to a level of madness.

There was one common factor on all of these boundary-less relationships…me. A lack of boundaries was the main in all of my stressors, whether it be school, work or at home. As a chronic ‘People Pleaser’ I had to fight the urge to ‘Yes’ every favor asked of me or invite I got. Long story short, you can’t be everything to everyone. Trust me. I did it, in every aspect of my life for years.

I needed crazy amounts of coffee to get through the day and OTC sleeping meds to help my mind calm at night. At height of my Yessing/People Pleasing, I was so stressed and over worked that I began having heart palpitations. My stress/caffeine intake was literally causing my heart to skip beats. That was when I decided enough was enough…sort of.

I was waking up at 3am for school and not coming home until 8:30pm. School. Work. Gym. Study. Repeat.

It took months for me to slowly gain control back. Here is the thing, when people are used to you dropping everything to help them, when you start saying no it’s difficult for others to swallow. I got a lot of backlash. Not verbally but I could feel people distancing themselves. This was of course stressful for me.

I said no to getting certified in fitness fads I didn’t believe in. I said no to dinner or hitting the bars with friends when I knew I needed to sleep. I said no to working long hours when I had an exam the next week. All of these examples at things I would have, and have said yes to, knowing it was going to cause me a great deal of unnecessary stress.

I said ‘Yes’ to meditation, exercise and SLEEP. I said yes to collecting content for the blog I have been dreaming of for years. I said yes to things to help me be a better version of myself, things I would never have tried six months ago. I started seeing a Reiki/Energy Doctor.

I am still so new to this level of boundary setting. Baby steps are hella important. I feel like I am in a place now where, after months of practice, I can say no when I know it is the best choice for me.

Please tell me I’m not the People Pleaser on the planet… Im totally down for any more tips//tricks. Leave me a note.

  • OCD Organization: Agenda Addition

I have Selective OCD, self-diagnosed of course, but it comes out in full force when it comes to my Agenda. My schedule is crazy, especially during school. The only way I can manage is with color coded washi tape filling in the white space to create a visual representation of my life.

I have been using my wash tape method for two-ish years and it is by far the best system I have come up with. I used to use pen and highlighter which is just a little to permanent. If there is a change in plans/rescheduling or cancelation white out was my only option. Then I moved to pencil which was very… vanilla.

    Enter washi tape.

First and foremost, its cute. There are a million colors and patterns to choose from so you can get creative. You can use sharpies AND it wont bleed through…which can add more color to an otherwise boring pencil and paper system. My favorite feature about washi tape? It doesn’t rip paper… so you can peel it off if your plans change!!!

I don’t go anywhere without my planner. You never know when you’re going to get a text about babysitting on a Saturday a month from now or an opening in Tuesday night’s boxing class. Not only does putting it in my planner give me a reminder each night when I plan/pack for the next day, but the process of selecting the tape and writing it out helps me remember.

Each major activity I have has its own color tape. Nannying is purple, school is pink chevron, the gym is teal…you get the picture. By having this system all I need is the tape and the time. It simplifies the planner and I know based on the number of tape strips how crazy my day will be. Some days I will have three or four pieces of tape, others will be just one.

Michael’s is my go-to place for washi tape… they have an entire wall. Most of the tape comes in a set of two with  different colors//patters. Im craving a tape shopping spree as I type.

I have been doing it this way for YEARS and it’s such a game changer.

Are you an agenda girl? Are you more modern and use your iPhone? How to you keep track of your life? Let me knowwww!
